Star Trek TNG Next Generation Picard Borg Original Blueprint 36x23 1988 Q Who? There is some acid burn/yellowing on the right hand side and very minor fading and creasing, considering the age. The work is in generally great condition for being an ammonia blueprint pulled 30 or so years ago.
These is a rare, original Star Trek: The Next Generation working production blueprint from the collection of Elaine Sokoloff, a graphic and scenic artist who worked on the show during seasons 2 and 3. It is an old fashioned ammonia blueprint pulled at the blueprint shop on the Paramount lot. The work is in generally good condition, especially for being ammonia blueprints that are nearly 30 years old. There is very minor fading and some acid burn and minor creasing, but very easily legible and in great shape for a blueprint of this age. Elaine recalls that she was having the blueprint shop pull runs of 9 of each drawing that was used in the creation of the iconic sets used in the show.
The distribution was to the producers and production office, one to the scene shop, one to the Production Designer, one to the Set Designer, one to the Director of Photography, a couple to the art department. The original drawing was filed in the art department flat files. Very few of the run of 9 prints ever left the lot. In all likelihood, most were eventually lost or thrown away at some point. This is a standard architectural sized blueprint, 24 x 36 inches in size.
Elaine Sokoloff was best known for her paintings of a nude model in space for the episode A Matter of Perspective for which she received screen credit on the show. She painted a forgery of Dalis Persistence of Memory for the episode The Most Toys, created several alien languages used in episodes, and designed an alien revolutionary propaganda poster for.
Elaine writes about the prints. These are actual working production ammonia blueprints from Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, used in the creation of the iconic sets.Only a very small, focused run was pulled at the time, from each drawing used for the sets. The distribution, as I recall it, was one each to the Producers, Production Designer Richard James, Set Decorator Jim Mees, Director of Photography, Director of the show, Production Manager, the scene shop, and several to the rest of the art department. I would imagine most blueprints from the runs never left the lot at all and many were just lost or thrown away eventually. The original drawing was archived in the art department. The size is standard blueprint size, 24 x 36 inches. The condition and color of nearly all of the blueprints is pretty remarkable, considering they are nearly 30 years old now. They were found in a roll in my storage, and have seen very little light during all that time. My suggestion is for anyone who buys them that they either keep them in some kind of archival tube or in a flat file, or if they plan to hang them on a wall with the least fading possible they are framed with UV glass and acid free materials and kept from direct exposure to sunlight or harsh light. Picard was the painter of one of them, in that episode and I "taught" Patrick Stewart how to paint before the episode was shot. It was a very short lesson. I also wrote some of the art history criticism Data used as lines for that episode.
My own artwork is all over the Star Trek sets, especially in Season 3. I painted a forgery of Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" for the episode "The Most Toys", created an alien written language and signage and designed an alien revolutionary propaganda poster for the Ansata terrorists for the episode The High Ground.I created another alien language for the Promelian aliens for another episode, including the design of the signage for their spaceship. Fairly early into season 3, I was working on nearly every control panel that was created for the show, applying lighting gels to the backs and metallic tape to the fronts of the panels to help create the famous graphic look of the Enterprise and other space ships used on the show. I worked closely with the Set Decorator on specific details of the scenic design, including applying beads to a huge "alien" musical instrument for one episode. I was also art director for the Tribute to Gene Roddenberry held by the March of Dimes, and laid out the "GREAT BIRD OF THE GALAXY" title and Gene Roddenberry's name for his director's chair.
I also did art work for the model of the galaxy for the opening credits of TNG, and her initials were used along with initials of main cast and crew in code on the Star Trek control panels as an Easter egg of sorts.
